Akin was made in collaboration with Sabin Aell for the Pink Progression show at the McNichols Civic Building in Denver, CO in 2020.

“Dearly Disillusioned” is a boundary-pushing exhibit coinciding with the centennial of women’s suffrage and the third annual Woman’s March. In this exhibit, four local collectives come together with unique and compelling perspectives on gender identity, protest, and equality. Curators and artists collaborate to explore new intersections of historical and contemporary narratives that inspire change in our community.

Akin
elegant — crude
clouded — refined
polished — coarse
porcelain — asphalt shingles

Porcelain is the symbol of purity and the elite. Asphalt shingles are a dirty industrial building material. Beyond the immediate visual differences, both consist of materials sourced from the earth. Porcelain is primarily kaolin. Asphalt is from natural deposits formed from microscopic algae and other once-living things.

By extolling the particularities, we unearth a new creation. Not giving into bias and prejudice, we equalize the playing field. Unexpected observations broaden our scope of what can exist. While shaping energetic clouds, we bring forward a new story and narrative for the future.
